Core Java interview questions: quick answers

Review these concepts, then use the topic practice below for scenarios and follow-up questions.

Is Java pass-by-value or pass-by-reference?

Java passes values. For an object argument, the copied value is a reference to the object. A method can mutate that shared object, but assigning a different object to the parameter does not replace the caller's variable. This distinction explains why changing a list can be visible to the caller while reassigning the parameter is not.

What is the difference between method overloading and overriding in Java?

Overload selection happens at compile time using declared types and applicable parameter lists. For an overridable instance method, runtime dispatch then selects the implementation for the receiver's actual class. A subclass object stored in a superclass variable does not make the compiler select an overload that requires the subclass type.

Why must equal Java objects have the same hashCode?

Hash-based collections use the hash code to narrow the lookup before checking equality. The Object contract requires objects that are equal according to equals to return equal hash codes. Unequal objects may still share a hash code. Override both methods consistently when defining value equality, and avoid changing equality-relevant fields while an object is used as a map key.

What happens to transient fields during Java serialization?

Default serialization writes non-static, non-transient instance fields. A transient reference field is normally null after deserialization; a transient primitive has its default value. Custom serialization code can explicitly restore values. Marking a field transient does not encrypt the stream or make deserializing untrusted input safe.

Core Java Interview Prep FAQs

Core Java refers to the fundamental Java language and platform concepts such as OOP, collections, exceptions, multithreading, memory behavior, streams, and JVM basics used in most Java applications.

Yes. Core Java is one of the strongest foundations for freshers who want backend, enterprise, Android-adjacent, or full-stack roles because many frameworks build on top of it.

Prepare by revising OOP, collections, strings, exceptions, streams, multithreading, JVM basics, memory management, and a few real coding and debugging scenarios.

The highest-impact Core Java topics are OOP, collections, equals and hashCode, exceptions, streams, concurrency, garbage collection, memory, and performance reasoning.

Basic problem solving helps, but strong Core Java interviews focus more on language behavior, APIs, object modeling, debugging, and production reasoning than on advanced algorithm rounds alone.

A focused revision usually takes two to six weeks depending on your prior Java usage, concurrency comfort, and how much practice you have with explaining trade-offs clearly.

Useful projects include console apps with file handling, multithreaded utilities, API clients, small backend services, and refactoring exercises that demonstrate clean object-oriented design.

Java is the language and ecosystem, while the JVM is the runtime that executes Java bytecode and manages memory, threading, and platform independence.
