React interview questions: quick answers

Review these concepts, then use the topic practice below for scenarios and follow-up questions.

Why does React state still have the old value immediately after a setter?

A render receives a snapshot of state. Calling setCount schedules another render; it does not replace count inside the running handler. When the next value depends on the previous one, use an updater such as setCount(previous => previous + 1). Three queued updater calls increment three times; three calls using the same count + 1 snapshot do not.

When does useEffect cleanup run, and why can setup run twice in development?

Cleanup runs before an Effect sets up again after a dependency change and when the component unmounts. Strict Mode also runs an extra setup-and-cleanup cycle in development to expose missing cleanup. Undo subscriptions, timers, or connections created by setup. Do not suppress this check with a flag that leaves the underlying resource leak unfixed.

What makes a React input controlled, and how is a checkbox different?

A controlled text input receives its current value from React state and updates that state in onChange. A checkbox uses a boolean checked prop and event.target.checked. Keep the value type consistent for the lifetime of the input; changing from undefined to a string switches an uncontrolled input to controlled and causes a warning.

Why can array-index keys cause bugs when a React list is reordered?

Keys identify siblings across renders. An index identifies a position, so inserting or reordering items can associate existing component state with a different item. Use a stable ID from the data. Generate that ID when creating the record, not on every render; a changing key recreates the component and can reset its input state.

React Interview Prep FAQs

React is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces with reusable components, declarative rendering, one-way data flow, and a strong ecosystem for modern frontend development.

Yes. React is a strong frontend choice for freshers once they understand HTML, CSS, and JavaScript fundamentals because it teaches component thinking, state management, and modern UI architecture.

Prepare by covering JSX, components, props, state, hooks, forms, routing, rendering behavior, performance basics, testing, and a few real frontend project scenarios.

The highest-impact React topics are components, hooks, state ownership, rendering, controlled forms, routing, context, performance optimization, and debugging update behavior.

Yes. Strong JavaScript fundamentals are essential because closures, functions, arrays, objects, modules, async behavior, and event handling directly affect React code quality.

A focused revision usually takes two to six weeks depending on your JavaScript depth, project experience, and whether you practice real interview-style explanations.

Good React projects include dashboards, form-heavy flows, search and filtering UIs, authenticated frontend apps, and one production-style project that shows routing, API handling, and component reuse.

React is used for web interfaces, while React Native uses React concepts to build mobile applications with native components instead of browser DOM elements.
