Spring Boot interview questions: quick answers

Review these concepts, then use the topic practice below for scenarios and follow-up questions.

How does Spring Boot auto-configuration work, and how do you debug it?

Auto-configuration applies configuration when its conditions match, such as required classes, properties, or missing beans. Supplying your own bean can make the corresponding default configuration back off. Start with the condition evaluation report, enabled with --debug, to see which conditions matched before adding exclusions or duplicating configuration.

Is @RequestParam required by default, and can it read a JSON request body?

In Spring MVC, @RequestParam binds Servlet request parameters, including query strings and form data. It is required by default; use required=false or Optional for an optional argument. It does not bind a JSON request body: use @RequestBody for that. Conversion to a target type such as Integer happens during argument binding.

Why can calling a @Transactional method from the same class bypass transaction advice?

With the default proxy mode, transaction advice runs when a call passes through the Spring proxy. A method calling another method on the same object bypasses that proxy, so the inner annotation does not create its own transaction boundary. An outer transaction may still exist. Put the boundary on the externally invoked service operation or call a separate managed service.

Is a HikariCP connection timeout the same as a slow SQL query?

HikariCP connectionTimeout limits how long a caller waits to obtain a connection from the pool. It is not a SQL execution timeout. Pool exhaustion can result from slow queries, long transactions, leaked connections, or excess concurrency. Check active connections, waiting requests, query duration, and database capacity before increasing maximumPoolSize across every application replica.

Spring Boot Interview Prep FAQs

Spring Boot is a Java framework that helps developers build production-ready backend applications quickly using auto-configuration, embedded servers, dependency injection, Spring Data, REST APIs, and Spring ecosystem support.

Yes. Spring Boot is a strong choice for freshers after Core Java because it teaches backend APIs, dependency injection, data access, validation, and production-ready application structure.

Prepare by revising Core Java, Spring basics, dependency injection, REST APIs, Spring Data JPA, security, validation, transactions, and a few real backend project examples.

The highest-impact topics are dependency injection, auto-configuration, REST controllers, Spring Data JPA, transactions, exception handling, validation, Spring Security, Actuator, and production troubleshooting.

Yes. You should be comfortable with Core Java, OOP, collections, exceptions, and basic multithreading before going deep into Spring Boot.

A focused revision usually takes two to six weeks depending on your Java background, your depth in Spring Data and security, and whether you practice real interview-style answers.

Good projects include REST APIs with authentication, CRUD services with Spring Data JPA, order or payment workflows, microservice communication, and one production-style backend project with validation, logging, and deployment basics.

Spring is the core framework that provides dependency injection, MVC, transactions, and integration support. Spring Boot builds on top of Spring to reduce setup using starters, auto-configuration, and production-friendly defaults.
