CloudFormation
Learn AWS CloudFormation infrastructure as code for stacks, templates, parameters, change sets, drift detection, and repeatable environments.
Last reviewed: June 2026
🔍 What Is It?
AWS CloudFormation provisions AWS resources from declarative templates.
Templates define resources, parameters, mappings, conditions, outputs, and dependencies. A deployed collection of resources is called a stack.
🎯 Why Do We Need It?
Production infrastructure must be repeatable, reviewable, and recoverable.
CloudFormation lets teams version infrastructure, deploy consistent environments, review changes, and reduce manual console drift.
Common developer mistakes:
- →Choosing defaults without checking security, cost, or failure behavior
- →Treating AWS services as isolated tools instead of part of an architecture
- →Skipping tags, alarms, IAM review, backups, and runbooks until production incidents happen
- →Building manually in the console and then struggling to reproduce environments
🏗️ What Happens in Real Projects?
A platform team defines VPCs, subnets, IAM roles, load balancers, Lambda functions, API Gateway routes, and alarms through CloudFormation. Pipelines deploy stacks to dev, staging, and production with environment-specific parameters.
Change sets are reviewed before production updates.
⚙️ How It Works
CloudFormation reads a YAML or JSON template and creates, updates, or deletes resources to match the desired state.
It tracks stack state and dependencies. Change sets preview updates. Drift detection identifies resources changed outside the stack.
💻 Example
Minimal CloudFormation resource — A simple S3 bucket definition.
🤔 Common Confusions
❓ Is CloudFormation the same as Terraform?
No. Both are IaC tools. CloudFormation is AWS-native; Terraform is multi-cloud and has a different workflow.
❓ Does CloudFormation prevent all drift?
No. It can detect some drift, but teams must avoid manual changes and run detection where needed.
❓ Can every AWS feature be managed instantly?
CloudFormation support may lag behind new service features, though coverage is broad.
🚨 Common Production Issues
**Manual console edits** create drift and surprise future deployments.
**Large monolithic stacks** make changes risky and slow.
**No change set review** causes accidental replacements or deletions.
**Poor parameter handling** leaks secrets or creates inconsistent environments.
✅ Best Practices
Keep templates in source control
Use change sets for production updates
Split stacks by lifecycle and ownership
Avoid storing secrets directly in templates
Use stack policies for critical resources where appropriate
Run drift detection and remove manual changes
🏛️ Architect's Note
IaC is not just automation; it is memory. It lets the organization remember how production was built and rebuild it when pressure is high.
