CodeBuild
Learn AWS CodeBuild for managed builds, tests, packaging, security scanning, environment variables, artifacts, and logs.

🔍 What Is It?
AWS CodeBuild runs build jobs in managed build environments.
It can compile code, run tests, build Docker images, package artifacts, run scans, and publish results without managing build servers.
🎯 Why Do We Need It?
Build servers require maintenance, scaling, patching, secrets, and environment consistency.
CodeBuild provides repeatable build environments that integrate with CodePipeline, ECR, S3, CloudWatch, IAM, and VPC networking.
Common developer mistakes:
- →Choosing defaults without checking security, cost, or failure behavior
- →Treating AWS services as isolated tools instead of part of an architecture
- →Skipping tags, alarms, IAM review, backups, and runbooks until production incidents happen
- →Building manually in the console and then struggling to reproduce environments
🏗️ What Happens in Real Projects?
A microservice build uses CodeBuild to install dependencies, run unit tests, build a Docker image, scan it, push it to ECR, and produce deployment metadata for CodePipeline.
The build role has only the permissions needed for logs, artifacts, ECR push, and required secrets.
⚙️ How It Works
A build project defines source, environment image, compute size, IAM role, buildspec file, environment variables, artifacts, logs, and optional VPC access.
The buildspec controls phases such as install, pre_build, build, and post_build.
💻 Example
buildspec.yml — A simplified buildspec for a containerized API.
🤔 Common Confusions
❓ Is CodeBuild only for Java or Node?
No. It can run many language and toolchain environments, including custom Docker build images.
❓ Where do build logs go?
Build logs commonly go to CloudWatch Logs and can also integrate with pipeline views.
❓ Should secrets be plain environment variables?
No. Use Secrets Manager, Parameter Store, or pipeline secret integrations rather than hardcoding sensitive values.
🚨 Common Production Issues
**Overprivileged build role** can modify production infrastructure or secrets unnecessarily.
**Secrets printed in logs** leak credentials.
**Non-reproducible builds** depend on mutable latest packages or images.
**Slow builds** from no dependency or Docker layer caching.
✅ Best Practices
Use least privilege IAM roles for build projects
Keep buildspec files in source control
Use pinned tool versions where practical
Pull secrets from managed secret stores
Publish test reports and artifacts
Optimize caching without compromising reproducibility
🏛️ Architect's Note
CodeBuild sits in a sensitive spot: it sees source, artifacts, credentials, and deployment metadata. Treat build security as supply-chain security.
