AEM interview questions: quick answers

Review these concepts, then use the topic practice below for scenarios and follow-up questions.

What is a Sling Model, and when should it adapt from a Resource or a request?

A Sling Model is an annotated Java class or interface that adapts Sling objects into a model with injected data. Use Resource when the model only needs resource data and compatible injectors. Use a request adaptable when it needs request-dependent objects or behavior. Choose the adaptable according to the actual injection requirements rather than declaring a request for every component.

How do you investigate a Sling Model adaptation that returns null?

Check that the model is registered, that the adaptable type matches, and that required injections can be satisfied. Resource.adaptTo can return null when adaptation fails. ModelFactory.createModel can provide an exception with diagnostic information. Making every injection optional may hide a missing content or service dependency instead of fixing it.

What does AEM Dispatcher do, and why might published content still look stale?

Dispatcher provides caching and load balancing alongside a web server, commonly in front of AEM Publish. For stale content, first check whether the new content reached Publish, then compare responses through Dispatcher and any CDN. Inspect cache eligibility and invalidation at the layer serving the old response; republishing alone does not identify which cache or publication step failed.

When would you use an AEM Content Fragment?

Use a Content Fragment for structured, page-independent content that needs reuse across pages or channels. A Content Fragment Model defines its fields, while the consuming application decides presentation. For example, one product description can support a website and a mobile application. GraphQL delivery is one option for exposing that structured content to a headless frontend.

AEM Interview Prep FAQs

AEM, or Adobe Experience Manager, is an enterprise CMS used to build, manage, and deliver websites, content-driven experiences, digital assets, and authoring workflows at scale.

AEM is usually better after you are comfortable with Core Java, web basics, and content management concepts because enterprise AEM work combines Java, Sling, JCR, authoring, and deployment practices.

Prepare by covering JCR, Sling, components, HTL, OSGi services, Dispatcher, editable templates, workflows, security, Cloud Service basics, and at least a few production troubleshooting scenarios.

The highest-impact AEM topics are JCR, Sling request resolution, components, dialogs, Sling Models, HTL, Dispatcher, workflows, content fragments, security, and Cloud Service deployment basics.

Yes. AEM developers should understand Java fundamentals well because custom components, services, Sling Models, OSGi configuration, and enterprise troubleshooting all depend on Java fluency.

A focused revision usually takes two to six weeks depending on your hands-on project exposure, Java depth, and familiarity with Dispatcher, Cloud Service, and production support topics.

Strong AEM practice projects include reusable components, authoring templates, workflows, content fragments, Dispatcher-aware pages, and one production-style implementation that covers deployment and troubleshooting concerns.

AEM is one product within Adobe Experience Cloud. Experience Cloud is the larger Adobe suite, while AEM specifically handles content management, digital assets, and experience delivery.
